"At Your Own Pace" Pre-Recorded Course

An Inner Practice of Stillness

The practice of Yin Yoga is the art of consciously surrendering into feelings of discomfort to reveal and release the deeply held tensions and resistance patterns in the body and mind. Teaching Yin Yoga is the art of deeply integrating this process in our own being, then skillfully guiding others into their physical and meditative edges, while transmitting a stable, calming and equanimous vibration; compassionately holding safe space for their own unique experience to naturally unfold.

We can spend so much energy avoiding the uncomfortable aspects of life; such as tension, uncertainty, anger, fear, depression, or anxiety, yet wisdom teachings from all ages hint towards those very experiences being the fertile grounds for incredible spiritual growth. Yin Yoga is a practice that helps us become ‘comfortable with discomfort’, and release the held energies that accumulate when we resist the waves of life.

Life has stress, period. We can't avoid it but we can learn how to process it. Wherever the stress comes from, be it repetitive movement, poor posture, injury, mental stress from work or relationships, stimulation overload, emotional turmoil, or traumatic experiences, it ends up being stored as tension in our bodies. When we don't consciously and intentionally work through these tensions they build up, becoming tighter and more deeply integrated into our way of being. Have you ever seen (or been) someone who has worked at a computer for years and years without putting consistent awareness on posture and exercise? We can clearly see that this pattern, over time, results in the accumulation of tension and stress in the neck, back and shoulders, creating in a perpetually bent spine. Thankfully, our bodies are intelligent and ever-changing, and these patterns of holding tension can be undone!

The practice of Yin Yoga focuses on releasing tension held deep within the body's connective tissues; that is: the fascia, tendons, ligaments, joints, and the entire connective tissue network that weaves and holds together the fabric of our bodies!

In Yin, we move mindfully and gently into poses that allow for passive stretching and we hold these poses for longer than in most Asana practices (often four to five minutes for each pose). These long holds, when practiced mindfully, create the space for deep releases of physical, mental and emotional tension. By connecting with our breath, we can relax and release inner resistance; allowing gravity to gradually take us deeper into the posture. In this way, the tight parts of the body will naturally and safely release in their own time, without pulling or force. Over time the practice of Yin Yoga illuminates the undeniable connection between tension in the mind and tension in the body.
Whether for your own personal self-retreat, as an aid in your processing of deep tensions accumulated during this challenging period in the world, or as a foundation for teaching Yin Yoga as an offering to others; we couldn’t imagine a better time to come together, nourish ourselves with yoga, and support one another in this quiet and transformative practice.
About the Training

In this rich, transformative and potentially life-changing 60 Hour Live and Online Training, you will become firmly established in both the practice and the teaching of Yin Yoga.

Adapting to the times, the training will be a symbiosis of the ‘in person’ and ‘online’ platforms, becoming accessible to practitioners all over the world. The venue will be dependent on the number of in-person students - so whether you tune in from your own living room, are on the ground at Yoga Barn in Bali or sharing the privacy of Greg’s humble Bali home, we’ll come together in the best way to suit each person’s needs and the current world situation.

Training will be held live, in person and online, over 4 weekends (Fridays 3pm-6pm Bali Time (UTC+8), and Saturdays & Sundays 9am-4:30pm (UTC+8)). Students will have ample time to integrate and practice each week's lessons, as well as the time to continue with other work, studies, and family time throughout the course. By completing mini-quizzes each week and a final test and practicum at the end, students will qualify for a "60 Hour Yoga Alliance Yin Yoga Continuing Education Certification". Say that 5 times fast :)

This training is open to all who wish to sincerely learn and practice Yin Yoga. Whether you are new to Yin, an experienced practitioner, or a Yoga teacher looking to expand your offerings and grow in teaching, this training will help to develop depth, lived experience, and understanding in your Yin Yoga practice and teaching.

Students who wish to take this training but are unable to attend the sessions live in March, have the option to complete the pre-recorded course, available in April 2021.
May we be open and make the best of the times we live in,
and be grateful for living in a world with technology that allows us to practice together from wherever we are.
Training Includes:
Picture
  • Daily Practice: Throughout the duration of the course students will practice together at the beginning of each full day. The morning practice will be a combination of a short Hatha Yoga set for balancing aaaall that Yin, followed by a collection of various Yin Yoga poses. Teaching emphasis will focus on proper alignment of postures, conscious breathing, space to feel, silence, and listening to your inner guide. On the half-days, a shortened Yin practice will be taught before or after the lecture or practice teaching session.

  • Posture Clinics: We’ll be given proper instruction and lots of time throughout the day to fully experience the various Yin Yoga postures so that we can feel the effects and benefits in our own being - AND we also take turns guiding others in the poses we learned and holding space for each others' inner yogic process.

Beyond conscious communication skills, intelligent queuing and yogic knowledge, one of the main traits of a grounded and skillful Yin Yoga Teacher is the ability to hold space for others in discomfort; being deeply comfortable in ourselves amidst others' inner process.
The only way to develop this quality is through practice and direct experience; which is why so much of this training is dedicated to experiential practice.

  • Philosophy of Yin Yoga: Guidance will be given in the foundations of Yin Yoga as a sub-category of the greater Hatha Yoga system.  We won’t have time to cover the complete foundational philosophies of the entire Hatha Yoga system, so the teachings will be specifically selected and tailored for supporting the Yin Yoga experience. There will be accompanying homework, self-study and reading to go along with what we are learning, and most importantly, LOTS of time to practice and integrate. It will be a deeply nourishing and therapeutic journey for the mind, body and spirit.
  • Teaching Yoga: There will be talks and practices focused on the ‘Seat of the teacher’, which includes subjects such as:
    • Conscious communication skills
    • Holding a grounded vibration
    • Clear instructions and ques
    • Skillful weaving of philosophy and themes into classes
    • The importance of silence
    • Teaching with compassion, acceptance and tolerance
    • Activating the inner teacher
Picture
Through the integration of these principles and more,
intuitive connections will point to how these practices change our entire lives off the mat.

  • Sequencing, Safety & Variations: We’ll learn a number of Yin Yoga sequences, the basics of safe sequencing, as well as precautions and variations for various poses. Basic western anatomy as well as eastern energetic anatomy will be taught, adding depth and safe intelligence to your practice and teaching.

  • Supporting Practices: Subtle supporting practices can be intelligently interwoven in Yin Yoga sequences, creating a more holistic, grounded and peaceful experience. We will learn:
    • Yin-focused Pranayama (breathing techniques) for cooling and calming the nervous system
    • Techniques for supporting emotional release
    • Meditations for grounding, letting go of stress & anxiety, and relaxing the mind into receptive states of consciousness
    • Restorative Yoga poses to deeply relax the nervous system after surrendering into a challenging Yin posture.
It is impossible to cover the full depth of such a rich practice and the art of teaching yoga in such a limited time. However, it is our intention to give you a thorough, well-balanced, grounded and skillfully guided experience, leaving you with:
  • MUCH more ease and relaxation in your mind and body
  • Experiential knowledge that you CAN release tension and feel better in your body
  • A firm knowledge base in Yin Yoga principles
  • The tools to make Yin Yoga a part of your personal practice and life
  • The confidence and basic teaching skills to share the practice, in your own way, through your own unique expression, if you choose
  • A deeper connection to your inner teacher and intuition

Peace amidst the waves

We hope that you find peace; in your heart, mind, body, and by extension in your relationship with the ever-changing world; embodying greater compassion with yourself and others.

Important Notes and Student Preparations for the Training:

  • Please ensure that you have a quiet space where you will be undisturbed for the entire length of each class. Although this training can be completed in your own time, it is important to give your full commitment, attention and awareness to each class and practice, as you would in a live class. Set the appropriate time aside so that when you start a class or lecture you can complete it.
  • Students have 4 months to complete the full course requirements for certification.
  • Regarding Certification:
    • To ensure you are absorbing the course content, you will be required to complete a quiz for each section of the program, as well as the test at the end of the course - covering the entire course content.
    • You must send us a good quality, close-up video recording of yourself practicing a designated Yin Yoga class, on which you will receive constructive feedback. This is a very important part of the certification requirements, as we need to feel confident that you have integrated a base understanding of the practice before teaching others.
    • In order to receive Yoga Alliance certification, you must send us a good quality video recording of yourself teaching a short practicum to a family member or friend. If you are unable to teach to someone live, you may record yourself teaching a family member or friend online.
    • The Yoga Alliance Certificate is for 60 "Non-Contact" Hours
    • Certification is not guaranteed. All requirements must be successfully met to receive Yoga Alliance Certification. If you do not meet any of the requirements you will be given the opportunity to re-try. Our intention is for everyone to succeed and we will work with you if you are sincere. If a student requires significant ongoing guidance in order to meet basic certification requirements, they may need to sign up for private sessions with a teacher.
  • Students receive access to the course recordings for as long as this website is active.
  • There are no refunds for the pre-recorded training.
